Linked Excel chart in Word updates with reduced quality

    Hi All,

In Office 2007 I have linked a bunch of Excel charts to a word file, using; paste special-->paste link

When the charts changed in Excel, I opened the Word doc and got asked did I want to update the links, and when I clicked ok they updated..great!

The problem I have is that the Chart quality reduces hugely. Please see pre/post update jpegs.

Is there anyway to stop the chart quality decreasing? Its fine on this chart but I have lots of other busier charts that just look silly post the update.

    Thanks
    James

In the options, there are options to decrease image quality in Word to decrease file size. This might be the cluprit...

Word Options >> Advanced >> Image Size and Quality >>

    * Do not compress images in file (check this option)
    * Set default trarget output to: (choose 220 ppi)

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Abousetta,

Thanks so much for your reply. Sounds about right too.
In Word Options >> Advanced I cand find a "Image Size and Quality" section. Is it called something else in Word 2007 I wonder?

I have tried a few other things in Word Options >> Advanced, relating to linked objects but no change yet.

    Try these steps from MS:

Click the Office Button, and then click Save As.
Click Tools, and then click Compress Pictures.
    Click Options.
Click to clear the Automatically perform basic compression on save check box.
    Click OK.
In the Compress Pictures dialog box, click Cancel.
Note: Clicking OK on this dialog will not prevent the issue from occurring.

P.S. Don't have 2007 to check the options but I think they are generally similar between 2007 and 2010

    Hi Abousetta,

I did exactly what you said.. including the pressing Cancel in compress pictures box.
    Unfortunately it's persistent.

I tried a bunch of other things too.. very annoying nothing works. I bet Im doing something silly.

Well Ive got 144 charts anyway now so I reckon I'll just get a macro to copy and paste them in the right place.

    Thanks anyway

Yes, sorry I couldn't be of much help on this occasion. Without seeing the files, I can't really test any options... plus not having 2007, we could be seeing different results just as a result of the program's options. Maybe try saving as picture instead of linking them if you are going to be using a macro anyways to place them in the word doc. The main reason for linking is so that you can update, but if you can update with a macro then you should get the same results.

    Good luck.

What paste format did you use? The 'Microsoft Office graphic Object' format gives the highest quality and should not be affected by Word's compression as (IIRC) the file is in vector format.
