    Out of Memory

    Hi All,

I had a weird thing happen yesterday - I was working a rush job (isn't it always?) and the routine just flagged an object assignment with "Out of Memory" plus some small number(perhaps it was a 7??). So, eventually, I knocked Excel down and then brought it back up and the problem disappeared???

    Does anyone know why??

    Thanks,

    Orrin

    Re: Out of Memory

You had used all of the memory available to Excel. When you restart you clear the memory usage and there was enough memory.

    Re: Out of Memory

Yes, this has happened to me before (several times) when writing and debugging macros. Often I will find another copy of Excel running in the background that never closed properly causing a memory bleed. When this happens, I close all open workbooks and check the task manager for any Excel sessions still running in the background because they didn't close properly. Usually this doses the trick.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Out of Memory

    Hello xladept,

One other VERY Important thing to remember is that both your Internet Browser as well as Excel is competing for optimal RAM memory.

Solution: First open Excel, and then your Internet Browser.

Somehow Excel keeps on trying to preserve the RAM usage, and to place any other action to follow in line of any other activation.

    Regards.

    Re: Out of Memory

    Hi Winon,

Is this something specific to internet browsers or any other program using a large amount of RAM? I remember some threads explaining in great detail how program cycle (take turns) using RAM, and you set it up so that Excel's cycle is the shortest so that it was have a higher priority in when allocating RAM.

    Thanks.

    Hello abousetta,

    Thank you for your interest.

...program cycle (take turns) using RAM, and you set it up so that Excel's cycle is the shortest so that it was have a higher priority in when allocating RAM.
By default, Excel gobbles up any available RAM regardless of any prior settings. Besides that, Excel recommends at least 4 Gig of Ram to run "smoothly", although it seems to make do with whatever capacity of Ram you have available, provided it is not less than 2 Gig of Ram, and that Excel was activated before you started your Internet Browser or any other application.

In short, Excel can mess around terribly, or even "hang", if other applications were started prior to opening Excel. Sometimes it messes you around even if you had Excel opened first and then open any other application/s which want to share the available RAM with Excel.

    Best Regards

    Re: Out of Memory

daily I use 9-10... applications, all of them open, I open excel when I need to do some stuff, I have not seen "out of memory" but rarely it doesn't respond and the only way I know to solve it is ->task manager and close it.

    Re: Out of Memory

@John - I sometimes get the not responding, it says that when loading a large (50k+) file, and, after waiting several minutes, I also have often (but not always and never on the download) to knock it down.
