VBA and macros are one and the same thing. How can one be superior to the other?

unless you mean xlm macros in which case vba is superior in almost every way ;-)

Unless you are referring to "recording a macro" which has limited potential. It only records actions so you'd need to select a cell or range in order to format them. You can write VBA such that you don't need to select the cells to perform actions on them (one small example)
