    Logical Thinking

    Logical Thinking
The main street of Moruya is quite straight running in an east-west direction. As you drive into Moruya from the west, you pass a gang of county council outdoor staff.
When you eventually stop, you realise you have passed 4 more work crews at intervals along the street. Somewhere back along the street you also passed the council offices (on your Left).
The leading hands of the gangs have different nick names and different nationalities.
Each gang is working on a different job, has a different piece of equipment or vehicle – each of a different colour.

    1. The Welshman is the leader of the gang with the white machine.
    2. The gang working on Job No. 4 is lead by an Irishman.
    3. “Red Mick” is the leader of the gang with the yellow machine.
    4. The Scotsman’s’ name is “fungus”.
    5. As your face the Council Offices, the gang with the yellow machine is to the right (your right) of the gang with the grey machine.(They are next to each other).
    6. The four tonne truck is being used on Job No.1 and the leader has a ginger beard.
    7. The Dingo Digger is orange coloured and is working on the Job No.5.
    8. “Long John” is the leader of the middle gang.
    9. An Englishman is the leader of the first gang you pass.
    10. The Bucket Truck is being used by the gang working next to Job No. 5.
    11. Job No. 3 is being done by the gang next to the gang with the gang with the Dingo Digger.
    12. “Doc” is in charge of the gang using the Wire Winder.
    13. The Australians gang has a Crane.
    14. The Englishman is the leader of the gang next to the gang with the green machine.

    What nationality is “Black Mick”?
What machine does the gang working on job No.2 have?

    Hey, pike,

Are the jobs numbered 1 through 5 as you passed them on the way in?

    Re: Logical Thinking

    Hi Pike

We have a similar conundrum here in Fife.

It's a bit more baffling though!

The gangs are difficult to identify, they all wear hard hats, eye goggles, protective gloves and hi-viz jackets, no matter what the task.

    Movement is difficult to detect.
I'm lead to believe, a doctor accompanied by 6 senior executive officers, similarly attired but identifiable by the stripes on the hats, is despatched to check for pulses. If one is found the offender is immediately removed from the pay-roll.

This situation carries on for weeks on end, and the gangs attract art-critics anxious to comment eloquently on the life-like poses adopted by the installations.

    The puzzlement is this.

Where do the speed bumps, deep holes in the pavements and roads, and the “don't do this/don't do that signs” magically appear from?

    Re: Logical Thinking and Faith

You have been in contact with a superior being/god (read “supercomputer” if you are not of a religious mind). You know this being has a track record of always being 100% correct. It/he/she has never made a mistake.

It presents you with two vaults. Vault A has a window in it and you can see $10,000 in it (more or less). Vault B has no windows.

The being tells you that you have two choices. You can either have both vaults opened or you can choose to just open up Vault B. The being tells you that he has made a prediction and based on this prediction he has already filled Vault B (or not).

If he has predicted that you will open up both vaults, and then he left Vault B empty (you’d get the $10,000).
If he has predicted that you will only open up Vault B, he has put $1,000,000 into it. (and you’d get the $1,000,000).
In any case, whatever is in the vaults is yours to keep. Would you choose to open both vaults or just vault B?

    Re: Logical Thinking

Well, it seems to me that ....

If you assume Big Blue is perfect, you open Vault B without further thought.

If you know Big Blue has been perfect to date, but suspect that it, like the rest of us, has some non-zero rate of random failures (i.e., just a very good guesser to date), then you can estimate the low limit of Blue's mean time to failure based on the number of observations and the level of confidence you require.

With 1% confidence, you can say that his MTBF is 99.1 (=-1/LN(1-1%)) times the number of past perfect guesses, so you open Vault B knowing that's it highly likely it will guess correctly this time.

If you require 99% confidence (because you are DESPERATE for SOME money), even if Blue has guessed right 100 times correctly in the past, the low end of his MTBF is just 21.7 correct guesses, and you open both.

EDIT: Your expectation is always higher if you open B.

    Re: Logical Thinking

Surely your decision is "after the fact". The amounts in the vaults won't change (I assume) based on your decison? Therefore open both

    Re: Logical Thinking

But if you decide to open both up, and you accept the fact that this being is infallible, you're throwing away $1,000,000. Although you are right, if the money is there, it's already there (and won't disappear).
