    Raspberry Pi

I think this is really cool (in an extremely geeky way).

Anyone seen it? Anyone getting one and if so what are you going to do with it?

I'm sticking one behind the TV upstairs with XBMC on it, though think the mrs might disapprove of a hacked together box in her beautifully laid out bedroom

    Re: Raspberry Pi

I am very interested in this - I just can't think how I might use one

At a possible cost of £25 though I might just buy one anyway - it won't break the bank if it just sits on my desk looking geeky

    Re: Raspberry Pi

Been following the story of this for a while. Shame the production had to be moved to China to make it possible to sell at the target price but guess that's the way things are these days. I'd quite like to get one but don't think I'd make much use of it realistically so unless I'm feeling particularly at a loose end I probably won't.

    Re: Raspberry Pi

If it was made in Britain and funding British jobs I would get one regardless, but made in China, no I don't need it.

    Re: Raspberry Pi

Agreed, I'd have happily paid double the price to have it manufactured in England, I feel however that this would probably defeat the purpose of a cheap computer for the unprivileged - unless of course there was some sort of subsidy model where people happy to pay full price subsidised those who couldn't

And honestly, how much could it have added being made here? The components would cost the same, the amount the inventors *** off, sorry I mean the entrepreneurs would earn by their hard work; creativity; risk taking; and diligence (something they are not prepared to extend to British workers), would be the same. So if built here how much extra would it cost? £8, £18. That is less than a night out so it would not impact my decision, whereas building in China most definitely will. Outsourcing is greed I am afraid, pure and simple.

They said the price would have been double had it been manufactured in the UK on the programme I saw.

Just to touch on this in an unrelated device, I really want to have an iPhone as I think the technology in that little bugger is exemplary. However, after much reading and a few videos that regard the manufacturing process, I don't want to support the corporate thugs (Apple) that endorse cheap labour for maximum profit. I can't understand why these types of technologies aren't mass produced via machine automation! While initial investment may be high, using CNC type technologies would pay off while at the same time would not involve the exploitation of human labour (or in China's case, slavery). I am literally at a crossroad regarding smartphones and specifically Apple's iPhone in that I really want the technology but don't want to support the casualties of business! Here in Winnipeg Canada, an iPhone 4S 64G retails for about $849 and if I knew that it was made human friendly I would gladly pay a couple hundred more for that technology, especially if it was designed and manufactured to last!

ahh but isn't it better to have loads working for a wage even a small one than mass unemployment because a machine does it all??

Will you be saying that when it extends to your job?

I don't think so! I'm sure that if you were to ask any one worker in a super plant that they would rather not work under bad conditions for pittance as pay. I guess if it was common knowledge that these people actually made what we would call a living then I would have a change in mind. However, they pretty much "volunteer" their 12 - 16 hours days and there are no issues with having little kids doing the same. These types of work practices have been outlawed in my country for many many years, as they should be.
