    Happy Fathers' Day

Just wanted to wish all the fathers out there a happy Fathers' Day! to all those that celebrate on Sunday, June 20th.

Hope you have fun with your children. I know I will. Barbecuing with the family and watching my little guy having fun playing. Now that is a really what it is all about ... and I get to watch Italy play! Cool!

    Re: Happy Fathers' Day

Funny how Father's day is celebrated on different dates around the globe.

In the US (and maybe in Canada as well?), Father's Day is the third Sunday in June.
In Germany, Father's Day has a different origin and is a very different observance than the American version.

Germany's Vatertag is supposed to be closer to a "boys' day out" and a pub tour with the guys (Männerrunde) than the more family-oriented Father's Day in the U.S. In eastern Germany the day is known as Herrentag, but in all parts of Germany, the Herrentag/Vatertag tradition has a bad reputation as a "Sauftag" ("drinking day"). It may make German bar and brewery owners happy, but hardly anyone else. In some regions groups of men (few of them fathers) still go off into the country to have a "Joe Six-Pack" party on Vatertag, but in reality, the German Father's Day beer bust is largely a thing of the past. While in the past a bunch of drunken men may have been amusing, it is no longer viewed as something funny. Besides, German men today hardly need a holiday excuse to have a few drinks with their buddies.

In NZ, Father's Day is celebrated in August and seems to be a purely commercial exercise, so the homeware shops can get rid of the last year's models of shavers and fishing rods. On top of that, NZ press has significant troubles spelling the day correctly: http://teylyn.posterous.com/typo-of-the-week

Anyway. To all the fathers out there: Enjoy the day!

    Re: Happy Fathers' Day

Vatertag is on Christ Ascension day, always a Thursday, and a public holiday in most German states. "Fathers" and other males gather around a little cart loaded with beer, don straw hats and pull the cart into a balmy early summer morning. Mothers and children stay at home and anxiously await the father's return and the ensuing hangover.

The Friday after Father's day everybody takes a leave day, so it's in effect a 4-day weekend with only one day off your leave balance. Come Saturday, the father might be back to a semi-normal state and actually spend some time with his children.
