    Lightbulb Donation Button

    Hi All!

I have been looking through your posts for my problems and its really usefull! Thank you all,

However I noticed that you dont have a donation button? I really think you should have a donation button.

I believe people are getting you guys to do work, and they are getting payment for it, its only fair that you guys get a little something too I believe.

    Thats a personal recommendation anyway.

    Thanks again guys!

    Re: Donation Button

All contributors to the Forum do so for FREE, i.e. we are not paid, so I don't think your idea would be workable - the money would probably just end up in the pockets of the site owners'.

But maybe we can have a commercial services subforum where part of the proceeds go to the site owners and the users who reply to the questions get part of it?

Sounds good until people start arguing over what precentage they should get compared to the input. Another option would be to donate funds raised to a charity of choice voted for by the members.

Yeah, if the %age is pre-determined by the system or maybe some logic that is inputted, i dont think that can create an issue. The charity option is good too. But not all would want to select that.

    Re: Donation Button

There are models already out there (e.g. http://www.ozgrid.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=105) and there are purely pay up front sites for membership (e.g.http://www.experts-exchange.com/). So no need to re-invent the wheel, but need to decide if this site want to join these 'pay' sites or not.

I have heard of arguments occurring when the OP does not identify who they thought provided the best answer in these sites because there is money attached to that acknowledgement. Here half the time OPs take the answer and don't give us a rep or even mark the threads as Solved. So if EF goes down this road then I would stock up on headache pills because the moderators are going to get an earful of complaints.

P.S. I am happy to accept cash, checks and all major credit cards. Also gifts, tropical vacations and fantasy getaways are accepted. Heck, I'll even be happy if you give me a rep. Maybe my new signature should be "Will work for reps".

Why should any of the proceeds go to the forum owners? surely it's enough to keep the members happy and keep the traffic coming, after all it's the members who will be doing all the work!

Somebody's got to get paid to be a referee because of all of the trouble that this door will bring. I can only imagine people fighting over who gave the 'best' answer or who's answer is more complete and should therefore be rewarded.

that's how ozgrid works and I imagine most others. I don't suppose the owners do it just for the love of community ;-)

I agree with abu. Such an action will gives only problems to the forum.

If you want to do a sub forum for payed solutions, you have to use other ways.

    Re: Donation Button

In general I don't mind a subforum. I sometimes have issues that I would love to pay someone a buck or two for a quick fix but there has to be strict oversight. Dare I remind everyone of the fiasco that happened with the July competition. There has to be mechanisms in place to make sure payment is made by the OP, litigation is prevented and a whole lot of other problems. I remember once seeing a comment on Ozgrid's pay subforum where the person who helped out never got paid and was furious. Ozgrid gets paid upfront regardless of the outcome of the transaction between the OP and the person helping out. Can EF afford to lose more good people due to problems like this?

Having said all that, if guarantees are put in place then theoretically a paid forum might work. But it can't have the same hands-off approach to the administration as with a free forum.

Not that my ideas mean much with only 20 odd rep points, but i fee lthat making a paid subforum would lower the whole outlook and level of service...
As in Canada and the US with healthcare, most good Canadian doctors go to the US to practise as that is where they get paid, and then the unpaid side suffers as they lose the good contributors...
i think that if you had a paid side, the Gurus would go there as they will get paid to do so... and i dont blame them either...
