I'm back on the old skin and most of the "not working" troubles and browser inconsistencies have gone away.
I'm back on the old skin and most of the "not working" troubles and browser inconsistencies have gone away.
Back on the old skin also. There are several warts that I've not previously mentioned (like font changes for indented text, message preview not WYSIWYG), but I'll sit on those now that the long-awaited reorganization is underway.
Wonder how that's coming ...

Entia non sunt multiplicanda sine necessitate
i havenot been on here in a few days and was just woundering if any other mods have take a steep back.
They're good people, if they have stepped down or refrained from posting or moderating its because thats the only way they have of getting though to the owners of this board to try to make them:The promises of comminication seem to have gone by the wayside:
- Clear up oustanding bugs..etc listed throught this thread
- Change the organisation of the forums
- Get rid of non related forums
- Quit testing on live environments
- Communicate well and in a timely manner
- Listen to and treat with respect the people that drive and care about this board and its future

Checking back to around page 5 or 6 i notice there really isn't a good ratio of owner/member posts.
For some strange reason we can't access the site this morning from the UK, its fine from elsewhere?
Anyway, Vai, Shub any further feedback for us on the issues raised in this thread?
and me its been absolutely appaling pages wont load.seems better once i changed the skin tho.

Apart from the forum moving like frozen molasses today:
Has anyone been playing with the CSS for the old skin? All the font sizes are off. Both in IE as in FF on different systems.
Anyone else seeing this?
The numbers in the thread and post count coulumn of the main forum view are huge, the text for the forum titles and posts is larger than it was. I can't find a zoom level where everything is readable.
Is this a ploy to put people off the old skin? It's more likely to put us off the forum alltogether!
Since changing back tothe old skin & using Google Chrome I have had no problems
Hope that helps.

It's a bit sluggish but otherwise seems fine on IE6 which we're still using at work. Maybe you should downgrade.
As for Crusoe and Friday maybe we should send out a search party!!!

Although it's perfectly understandable why it happens, I can't imagine the admins are motivated by us layering negativity on top of frustration. I would imagine in the end, we still catch more bees with honey than vinegar.

Yeah, all this stuff is frustrating as hell...absolutely. Fortunately the enjoyment I get from this forum comes from the people, not the features. I wish it all worked better, I'm with you guys 100%... except for the negativity...and I say that purely because I believe the only one's really listening to it is US. Why spread that around when there's real work we can do (and do) in spite of what ails us?
My two cents.
Even though the coaches no longer appear interested in the game, "Go team" anyway.
Maybe we could set up a weather thread and at least that will give us Brits somewhere to moan rather than here
Dom
Domski, the Water Cooler would be the perfect spot for that. Why don't you start the Weather thread?
As for forum use comfort, features, and owner response and responsibility, I highly recommend
www.thecodecage.com
They even have code tags in the Quick Reply box. And the paper clip to attach a file. And the "Mark solved" command actually works. And colors inside code tags. And there is a chat room. And ... and ... and..
Oh, and of course, a large number of high calibre advisors, MS Excel and MS Word MVPs.
So why not try www.thecodecage.com for your next MS Office question?!
Check it out!
Lol Martin, you know something we don't?
'J' i believe enough members voices have been aired to show we care about this board but the "admins" (you mean the dynamic duo - not frustrated RoyUk) have their priorities set elsewhere none of which are focused on this board.
You can only kick a man so many times before he up's and leaves or retaliates.
Unfortunately there is now little we can do to get them to take notice and heed the warnings, all the empty promises of it's "your board..." and how they want to make it the best it can be are still echoing!
'J' of course you are right thats why we are all here but it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth to feel the contempt you are treated with, if it wasn't for you, other experienced members and professionals answering here then this board would be nothing, so surely your voice should be heard and if possible incorporated in the board.
Dom, being a Brit means we have a god given right to moan and in any fashion we choose
Lol how many times can you mention a site that gives Microsoft Office Help in one postoh and thanks for the vote of confidence

Is it just me that is having repeated erratic errors trying to connect to this forum for the last couple of days?
Everyone who confuses correlation and causation ends up dead.
I've not had a problem ...
It's quite sporadic but I've had it probably 10 times in the last 2 days both from home and work, and no problem with any other site. Maybe it's the universe's way of telling me to spend less time in forums...![]()
Performance of the site has been poor for about 6 months now and nothing has been done to rectify it.
Rather than actually improve performance and streamline the back end of the site the time was spent developing ("bodging") a skin that no one requested and that doesn't actually work. Sterling effort by all concerned I'm sure we all agree.
JB, as for negativity etc... I agree in principle but put bluntly if this site wasn't the mess that it is no one would be posting to this thread.
It's a shame - I like(d) this forum but I find myself spending less and less time here these days and the time I do spend is largely spent waiting for pages to load.

I should have responded more fully -- I've found the site to be very sluggish in general recently, and this week in particular. Today, for me, it's been better.Originally Posted by R

I must be lucky, our internet is slow around lunchtime when about 7000 people all log on to BBC News etc but I've in general not had a problem (other than one day when it was slow as a dog).

I think Simon's right - when I have the problem, it's not slow loading, it's that the site isn't found at all.

ratcat, I find that the forum performance slows down considerably when it gets dark down under.
They're probably transferring the service to the only PC in the UK, and since these guys are all starting their day and logging on when it gets dark here, it's no wonder the forum gets slow.
But forum performance is not the only thing that's going down.
A few months ago, the Board Reader http://boardreader.com/sp/Excel_Help_Forum_15122.html showed that we had an average of 5 replies to each post. The weekly contributors top ten list had over 250 posts at the top position and never less than 150 at position #10.
These days, those numbers are much less.
Fact is that the regular contributors have started to drift away from this forum. The owner won't feel that change for a while, since visitors still come to the site via Google searches. But in the long run, the lack of high calibre contributions will result in a reduced Google ranking, a slow, downward spiral.
We've lost several Microsoft MVPs and other highly skilled members as moderators. Some of them are still around, but others have publicly declared that this forum is no longer of much interest to them, because of the way the recent changes were handled. Most of the retired moderators post much less than they used to as mods.
This will ultimately impact the quality of solutions offered, but then, if the forum is offline or slow most of the time, people won't stick around here anyway and won't come back for a second visit.
Saddle your horse. The sunset is coming.

It's a great shame that the mods/contributors who still stick around are willing to put the work in to keep the forum going when the owner quite apparently couldn't give a cr@p.
Dom
Oh, no! The owner swears that this forum is run by the users and that the users make all the decisions and that this will soon be the biggest Excelforum on the web.
We also may soon get a subforum for "get rich quick" schemes and other high-quality, Excel relevant topics.
I've just gone back to posting more at MrExcel.com, there's a lot of good folk hang around there. Have also joined The Code Cage, yet to start posting but it's only a matter of time.
Dom
One or two seem to have turned up at Experts Exchange recently...![]()
Some of these are chargeable though aren't they, or at least you have to pay to get rid of ads? And I have this ridiculous expectation that everything on the internet should be free. Can't be doing with MrExcel as people can't attach files.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to pay to join EE, you just need to sign up as an Expert (they do not, to be fair, make it obvious that you can do that for some reason!)
I've been a member for almost 4 years and never paid a penny. I have gained an alarming number of EE t-shirts though...![]()
But do you have to be an expert?
Couldn't you exchange the T-shirts for something?
I have to admit it's never really bothered me. The main reason I signed up here was it seemed a bit more relaxed (apart from the mods who are like hawks) and before it all went **** up I liked the way it was set up (apart from the slightly ridiculous number of sub forums).
I've thought about trying EE before but was put off by the charging side of things as well even though I knew as a wannabe expert I could hopefully not need to pay. I'm not that keen on contributing to something that charges for my efforts no matter how many t-shirts they give away.
Dom
No you don't (but you'd certainly qualify). On the sign-up screen, ignore the credit card bits and there's a 'Think you're an Expert' link on the right hand side. Click that and follow the instructions. You only need to get 10,000 points (which you can do by answering 5 questions) to attain Expert status and then you only need 3,000 points a month (2-3 questions) to maintain it, which is really easy (unless Mr. Jones is bored).
I can't imagine anyone would give me much for the T-shirts.
Well, perhaps you could exchange 10 T-shirts for an expert or something.
OK, thanks romperstomper. Is Mr Jones the uber-expert?
Domski - probably me, I find it really hard to visualise things without seeing them in front of me. Not to mention of course that sometimes people are confused/confusing and don't always convey all the necessary details, as you will no doubt be aware. MrExcel also seems phenomenally busy and well-catered for already.
Yeah, he's number 1 in the overall Excel rankings (for the time being).![]()
Later this year the "up and coming" site that both teylyn and NBVC mentioned will be totally ad free to members but account upgrades will still be available. If i was affluent the afore mentioned site would not have ahd any ads at all, for anyone!
Thanks to all who have visted that site and decided to join, one thing the owner promises is to always listen, always respond and if at all possible comply with requests and ALL changes are always discussed firstly with the Moderators, Solution Centre Professionals and the VIP's then when we are almost there any change or proposed change is clearly announced for comment.....as it used to be here in the good old days![]()
I agree it's good to be able to visualise and the HTML maker add-ins help with that in a lot of cases but sometimes it's no substitute for getting your hands on the actual spreadsheet.
I also agree it's very well catered for with a plethora of MS MVP's and some very keen posters, getting a post in before three or four other people is often a mission, hence why I went looking elsewhere.
If you're like me, who knows some stuff but nowhere near as much as some of the real gurus, anywhere that mentions declaring yourself as an expert or specialist is a bit of a big step.
Dom
Dom - I've just signed up at EE (and I have signed up at Simon's too, just not done anything yet). What's the worst that can happen? They revoke our membership and we don't get lots of free T-shirts.
Simon, since you're asking, money would be pretty nifty.
Cheers for the encouragement. A mug would be nice, I don't want much.
Unfortunately Simon I've found the ads play havoc with my ability to view your site. I can only click on a couple of links before I get a HTTP Error : 404 Not Found and then have to shut down all my IE sessions and start again. I get that with other sites too but only every now and then and think it must be something to do with out firewall at work or the maybe the fact we're still in IE6.
Dom
IE6??????? Ewwwwwww! (corporate networks try to block ads so it's entirely feasable that thats the case)
I promise that later this year ads will no longer be a part of member life there, i have to let them run a while longer (september almost) as some good people have paid the £5 for the year for VIP status and a completely ad free experience, so if you can stick with it until then you'll be pleasantly suprised when they have gone!
dosh! wow i'm of to EE if i can get money for drivel i'm in lol
Has anyone else noticed that expertsexchange.com could also be broken out to expert *** change.com?
Answer 10 questions correctly, you're a free recipient.
Make a mistake, you're a donor.
I think I have two so I'll send you one!![]()
That would be novel - and I could use it!
Of course, I've already registered and upgraded to VIP, so I guess I've lost my bargaining power!!![]()
all these freebies are fine but for the unemployed amongst us hard cash is always best![]()
I can't remember the last time I wore a tie!
Dom
@Domski: me neither.
<giggle>
But I remember the last time I cut one. Old custom in Cologne Carnival. THE day to get rid of your most hated tie is to wear it on the day when the women do the symbolic castration as an opening ceremony for the 5 crazy days.
Hah!
Sounds like you wouldn't last long in a Kölner Karneval bash!
Just remember: If the women are out to cut off some dangly bits, the tie is probably the best alternative to offer.
Especially when you consider that they pin the cut-offs to their costume for the rest of the day.
Maybe we should get this thread back on topic.
Can we please have a label for the check box that you see when you log in to the site with the new skin. There's a check box, but nothing tells you what it's for.
Holding my breath ...
So much for a feedback thread.I wonder what notes can be taken here for improvements.
It can't be that hard - I'd only made three posts here before someone figured out who I was!!![]()
Either that or I'm really monotonous...
Just when you thought no one understood what we're experiencing:
ExcelForum checks it's users for website feedback

That's funny!
You may or may not be interested to know that this new skin came from here http://www.youngcoders.com/
Although it appears youngcoders has, well, coders to create and/or maintain their skins - of which they have quite a few.
Correction, Simon. youngcoders.com seem to be using the same skin, but they have not created it.
The skin can be purchased at
http://www.completevb.com/demovb4/support?styleid=3
This is exactly what it looked like on day one and since then several "adjustments" were made. For the first hour or so, it even showed the Logo for SkylightForums.
Made my heart stop for a mo'
In fact, on that demo site you can read a few posts about the same bugs we've been complaining about here. Be quick. They seem to wipe threads regularly.

Thanks teylyn, i see, they too don't like they're defects aired!
How do people get on in life burying their heads in the sand?
Well, there's no need to change while you still find fools paying for a defective product, I guess.
Anyone else having difficulty with the message controls? None of mine are working in IE or Chrome.
Rgds,
Dave
It seems that currently none of the drop downs in the menu bars are working.
The owner has been notified.
Some core member functionality as well as some core moderator tools of the forum are no longer accessible, like viewing today's posts, viewing the member list, and more.
I've also just received a PM from a member who gets virus alerts for all pages of the forum.
Again, the owner has been notified.Hi
I'm currently getting a virus alert with the forum (all pages)
"floridaorigin.at:8080/fc2-com/google.com/orange.fr.php"
Link to known exploit site (type 750)
Anyone else getting this?
I can get all other sites without this warning so I'm assuming it is specific to the forum site.
Regards
Skin choosing from the drop down at the bottom of the page seems to have lost its functionality, too.
Writing this very post I find that the Quote icon in the Reply box no longer works. Actually, none of the icons in the Reply box toolbar are working.

It seems that a lot of JavaScript files are corrupt or not working, if you look at tha bottom left of your browser window you may see a yellow warning triangle showing some error details, either the files have been badly modified or the links to the JS for those files have been removed, that will definately cause some of the problems you mention.
The owners could simply re-upload all vbulletins core files, that will cure the issue.
Last edited by Simon Lloyd; 04-09-2010 at 12:16 PM.
There was a Virus attack on the forum which modified a lot of core files. After removal of the Virus we have managed to correct all the loss of functionality.
Still checking the board for any other function which is not working.... Till now all looks okay...
