Cup draw in Excel not using RAND

    Hi,

I run several local card game leagues but as we have grown over the years my old handwritten books are taking too long to keep updating so have decided to go modern and go digital.

My problem is I cant work out how to do a cup draw in Excel. As each league can be made up of several divisions we will run several cups and I would like to have the cups in the same book but on different worksheet for each league division. I've managed to find loads of cup draw files that use RAND as the basis for creating a draw but as soon as I update the league the cup draw goes all over the place. I've managed to learn that RAND recalculates everytime I do something so are there any other options?

I've managed to adapt some football league tables that I have found so have taken care of the league ok and many of our cups come are league based so can work out how to adapt what I have for these. However, we do run a knock out cup whereby the winner goes through to the next round and the loser is eliminated. Historically we have always limited entry to 64 teams for this to make the numbers easy to work. Happy to stay to that number but stuck as to what I do next to get round the RAND issue.

Just to make things worse sometimes if I am away other members of the committee will take over. I would hardly describe myself as more than basically skilled and I am the best of the lot of us so I need it to look easy to use with buttons etc to make the next draw but that only work if a valid entry has been made for each match in the previous round.

Probably explained all that really badly but hope you get the idea.

    Thanks for your help

    Pete

Re: Cup draw in Excel not using RAND

A simple procedural way around this is to use RAND, then for every cell with that formula do a Copy then Paste Special/Values back to the same cell. It will convert the formulas to numbers. However, this may be a pain, depending on how you have your data organized and how often you need to generate a new set of numbers.

Another way to do this is with a macro. It could be run with a button that causes a fresh set of random numbers to be placed into the designated cells. A macro solution is very specific to your particular file, so to make any progress on this you would need to attach your file.

    To post a file:
    1. Under the text box where you type your reply click the Go Advanced button.
    2. In the next screen look above the reply box and click the "paper clip" icon. You will get a pop-up screen.
    3. In the pop-up, click Add then Select to select a file from your local drive
    4. Click the Upload button to upload the file
    5. Click Done to attach it.

It will be displayed as an attachment underneath your post text. Alternatively as the last step you can click the Insert Inline button and a hyperlink to the file will be inserted directly into your post text in the spot where your cursor is set at the moment you click the button.
