Change date format to save as 06.08.13 instead of 06/08/13

The problem is the date format is 06/08/13 and it will not save as this format. how do I change the format to 06.08.13 which will enable me to save this file.

It will save the underlying value, which is 41492 for 6th August 2013. You will need to change those values to text values in the equivalent format if you want to retain it (but then, they won't be dates)
