Is it possible to have a formula/code that will record individual periods of absence???

hi,
is it possible on the attached file (1st tab abs and hols) to have another column that will display individual instances of absence??
ie.....if somebody is absent today and again next monday, can i make a formula that will tell me this person has been absent twice that totals say 3 days absence...2 days 1st time, a single day the next time. I have added a column to show what I want it to look like if that helps.
I have searched all of excel help but I can't seem to find an answer so hoping somebody on here could lend a hand.
