Exclamation Merging Two Large Data Sets using Two Common Columns

    Hello benevolent experts,

I need to merge these two data sets in order to do statistical analysis for my senior thesis. In the file I've linked below, I need to get employment statistics for specific census block groups from a list of all census block groups in the US into another data-set that only includes specific census block groups from metropolitan areas that I am studying.

The first data-set (sheet 1) includes (among other things) census tracts, census block groups (a number 1-6, each block group corresponds to a specific tract), and employment (titled "employed") in each block group for the entire US. The other data-set (sheet 2) has the census tracts, census block groups, and certain demographic for block groups within certain metropolitan areas I've selected for my study (i.e. the first data set has many more rows than the second one). The columns that the two sheets share in common are census tract, and census block group.

Once again, I need the column "employed" from the first sheet matched up and merged with the proper census block groups I've selected in the second sheet. The columns that are identifying the specific block groups in both sheets are "TRACT" and and "BLKGRP".

I'd greatly appreciate if anyone can help me on this. If you can do it yourself, great, but if all you can spare time for is instructions that is helpful too. This is a small but crucial step for my project.

This is a 52 MB file, so it was not attaching directly to this post. Here is the download link:

We would not be comfortable downloading such a huge file. It will be better if you attach a sample file like 20 rows or so. So we can just understand your data layout and format.

    To Attach a File:

    1. Click on Go Advanced
    2. In the frame Attach Files you will see the button Manage Attachments
    3. Click the button.
    4. A new window will open titled Manage Attachments - Excel Forum.
    5. Click the Browse... button to locate your file for uploading.
    6. This will open a new window File Upload.
    7. Once you have located the file to upload click the Open button. This window will close.
    8. You are now back in the Manage Attachments - Excel Forum window.
    9. Click the Upload button and wait until the file has uploaded.
    10. Close the window and then click Submit.

Sorry about that. The full file was not uploading when I tried to attach it to my initial post so I am going to take up arlu's suggestion and attach a sample of the first 20 rows of both sheets.

    Thanks for your help.

P.S. The reason the original file is so big is because sheet 1 is 200,000+ rows and sheet 2 is 112,000+ rows

It will be good if you tell us how you want your output to appear.
