find word in string, count how many special characters are to its left

Gday everyone

I have strings which are elements of an array which are of the form of
"microsoft~Excel~~Jordan~Forum~~~~"
The ~ characters are used to identify the position in the word within the string.

how would i find the term Jordan, as well as couting the number of ~ characters to the left of it?
