Use alternate names in a lookup

I am attempting to look up names in a list, but some of the names may be shortened. To account for the alternate/short names, I've created a list of substitutions on another sheet. My problem is, I don't know how to substitute the alternate/short names for those in the original list. The part I'm finding difficult is that some names have many alternates, and I want to search the whole list, then substitute all the names in that row for the first name in the original list.

I'm attaching the file I'm working with, I'd appreciate any help, even pointing me in the right direction. The file is just an outtake, I'll have thousands of original names, and all the names in the original list should return results.

In column F (see the yellow cells).

If there is a number in it, there is found a match.

Re: Use alternate names in a lookup

What I'd like to do is compare the first names from 'Original List' to 'Name-Alt' and compare that those results to 'Compare'.

I think the easiest way to accomplish this would be to create another sheet with the results from comparing the first names from 'Original List' to 'Name-Alt'. After that I could just use a formula to do the comparison. The results would be a copy of the whole row that contains the first name from 'Original List'.
