Number of Rows or Columns count

Hi am trying different methods to count rows or columns in given data set, without knowing last row or columns #

these two lines doesn't worj

i=range("A1").offset(1,0).end(xldown).rows.count
i= range ("A2").end(xldown).rows.count

this work fine

i=range("A1").currentregion.rows.count

can you please help with first two lines.
