Can't access macros after transferring Personal.xls file to new computer.

    Hello,

I have one workstation computer that I would like to transfer my macros I created in a Personal.xls folder to another computer. I have copied the personal.xls folder from the first computer saved originally as a 97 - 2003 excel file to a thumb drive. Then I copied this file to the XLStart file under C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart\Personal.xls I have also tried the global folder as well for all users. However when I open up Excel I get the "This file is in not in a recognizable format", I click ok, then the personal.xls worksheet opens with a whole bunch un-decrypted greek like code listed on the page. I go to tools > Macros and the personal workbook option appears but none of my macros show up. I was wondering what I have to do to be able to view these macros on the new machine. The first machine is an Excel 2010 Windows XP machine, with the file saved originally as a 2003 campatible file, and the second machine is a Windows 7 Home Premium Excel 2003, with administrative rights privelages on both machines.

    Thanks for any assistance.

    Hello Shullay,

I am hazarding a guess that the workstation is running on Windows XP or earlier. The "Greek like code" is actually compressed (zipped) XML data. The 97 - 2003 compatible file is only compatible with Windows 7 and later. The compressed XML code can not be read by earlier Windows versions. You would need to copy all the source code into flat files using Notepad and then import them to the older machine's VBIDE. After doing all this, you can then save the macros in that machine's Personal.xls folder.
    Sincerely,
    Leith Ross

Actually the computer the personal xls file is being copied to is a windows 7 home premium laptop running Office 2003. The source is a windows xp machine running office 2010 with the file save as a office 97 - 2003 compatible.
