Formatting cells or inserting lines in a protected sheet

I know how to get unprotected cells on a protected worksheet but allowing formatting of these cells while protection nis on does not seem to work. Also I would like the user to be able to insert a row in an unprotected area in a sheet but this also does not seem to work I think I have ticked the correct boxes after clicking the Protect Sheet button.

If you have protected the structure then you'll not be able to do what you want, how about posting a sample workbook here and we can sort that for you?

You can format and insert in the protected area, when protecting you need to select the options you want available, other than that you will need to use VBA and define the ranges that can't be edited.

    Simon,

I selected the options when I protected the workbook ( see screenshot on Sheet 2 of new attachment) but it does not seem to work. The next time I click protect they have disappeared.

Yes, they will have disappeared as Excel see's every protection as a new one unless you use VBA, i've named your two areas (do this by highlighting them and then typing the name you wamt for them in the box to the left of the formula bar), if you right click sheet1 tab and choose view code you will see the code i've added

You seem to have se a password when protecting the file that you sent.

The password is only on the sheet and if you check the code you will see that the password is password
