Generating a unique sequential number in Excel

    Hello

I want to design a database in Excel which records information on individual welds used in the Construction industry. My idea is to have a template file which the main workbook will be a pre-designed form with numerous information boxes I need to fill in. The first box will be a unique number which will be the next sequential number from when the file has been opened previously. This means that every weld installed over many years will have a unique number. Once the information has been inputted then I will need to save a new file using it's unique number in the file name.

It would be great if excel could generate this unique, next sequential number directly into the cell and then save the file automatically but using the same unique number in the file name.

    Any ideas? John

Re: Generating a unique sequential number in Excel

Please post a sample workbook. I have done something similar for another user in another forum. The requirement in that case was slightly different in that there was a need to track the next "Risk ID" which could be entered into one of three worksheets (with identical formats). The format of the Risk ID was a couple of alpha characters plus a three digit number. The alpha characters complicated the process a little so it's probably not worth offering that code as it could be largely irrelevant.

In short, the next Risk ID was calculated and stored in a cell on a Control sheet. The cell was named and then used in a Data Validation "list" of one element. In other words, the only thing that could be selected was the next sequential ID, regardless of which sheet it was being entered in.

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook, the workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook. Don't upload a picture when you have a workbook question. None of us is inclined to recreate your data. Upload the workbook and manually add an 'after' situation so that we can see what you expect. In addition clearly explain how you get the results..

Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'.

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
