How to bring Yahoo financial data into Excel?

Hi. I'd like to bring some Yahoo financial data, such as the numbers in the top row of this page:

    http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=HPQ

into an Excel spreadsheet. The numbers in this example would currently be:

    0.87 0.95 4.09 4.49

I know it's possible, because I've seen it done years ago, but I really have no idea where to start. Can anyone help me?

    Thanks,
    Kevin29

Use the DATA > Import external data > New Web Query wizard.

Thanks for your help. Got it working. Except that it imports the entire page. To import only a table, it asks for the specific table name. I've looked at the source code for the webpage listed above, but I don't see any table names. Are table names located in the source code? Could you possibly tell me the table name of the first table on the website above?

Thanks for any help from anybody.

When using your wizard, the web page appears onscreen. All around the screen you will see tiny yellow arrows pointing to the right. Each of these arrows is a "section" you can import individually.

Click the arrow next to the table you want and it will turn green. When you do this, only the green sections will be imported.

Umm, I don't think I have that. But I just realized I'm using Excel 2000 rather than Excel 2003 as originally thought. Does that make a difference?

When I do a web query, this is what my query looks like:

    http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/...ell3/Excel.png

See? No yellow arrows or preview of a webpage. It just asks me for the name of the table I want.

    Thanks again,

When I use the method I described above and record what Excel does, it appears the table name imported is called "8". Try that without the quotes...

Re: How to bring Yahoo financial data into Excel?

    MarvinP: Thanks. Interesting read.

Jbeauclaire: Thanks. 8 worked. I searched the source code for all the instances of "8", to see if I could find an "8" that appeared to be a "table name". There were numerous instance of "8" in the source code, but none of them appeared to be a "table name". So I'm not sure how I would use this feature in the future without your help, lol. But at the moment, I wasn't really looking for any more data than the particular data found in table 8, so I guess I am satisfied for the time being. I suppose I could always upgrade to Excel 2003 in the future if I want to become more advanced at this.

Anyways, thanks to both of you for your help with this particular question.
