Why is this custom format used?

I am attempting to understand a spreadsheet that I interited and need help understanding why a specific custom format style is being used on some fields.

    That format is:
    _(*#,##0_);_(*(#,##0);_(*”-“??_);_(@_)

Can someone advise why someone would use this complex format?

The results seem a little odd so I wonder if it has been copied correctly.

The first part should be the format for a positive number, the second part the format for a negative number, the third part for a zero value and the last for text.

Try formatting a cell and putting some numbers in to see what you get displayed.

    Hmm?
It's been a while since I saw something like that, and I honestly can't remember where it was.
Lotus 1-2-3 to MS Graph maybe?
How old is the file you inherited and where did you inherit it from?

Maybe this will jog the memories of our senior citizens.
