COUNTIF SUMIF functions don't appear to work

Hi there, I hope you can help me

I'm using basic COUNTIF and SUMIF functions to return a number of sales and total amount of sales

the equations are

=COUNTIF(spreadsheet!AJ:AJ,"Nov-03")

=SUMIF(spreadsheet!AJ:AJ,"Nov-03",spreadsheet!AK:AK)

there are no error problems, the equation simply returns the wrong number

it is only returning 1 item in the COUNTIF fuction, and that one item's amount in the SUMIF

yet I can manually go through the data and find over 50 bits of data that should be returned by this function, there are approx 40,000 items in each column in total

i am totally baffled, as I've used this function for some time with no problems

any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated
