Converting time to minutes and hours

    hi there guys,

i just want a confirmation regarding converting time in minutes and in hours....here's the thing...if like 12:00 PM minus 2:00 PM this will give me a time difference of 2:00 hours right? now to convert this 2:00 hours into minutes, i would need to multiply the value of 2:00 to 1440 right? so let me put it this way...if the value of 2:00 is placed on A2, then to get the number of minutes formula would be in A3 is A2*1440 is this correct? and to get the number of hours without the time format would be A2*24? am I doing this right?

    regards,

    stoey

Re: Converting time to minutes and hours

If you take 2:00 PM from 12:00 PM, you'd get a negative number which Excel isn't very keen on ... at least, expressed in hours and minutes. In fact, you'd get: -0.083333333 when formatted as General rather than a time format (which would just show up as hashes (###...###))

If you take 12:00 PM from 2:00 PM you'd get 2:00 AM which probably doesn't make sense. If you format that as General, you get 0.083333333. Multiplying that by 24 gives you gives you 2, that is, numeric 2 hours. Multiplying the hours by 60 gives you 120 minutes.

Is that the confirmation you were looking for?
