Clarification on pivot table cache index

Thank you VERY much for your quick response!

What exactly is a pivot table cache index?

I've looked at a number of references and it sounds like it might just be a sequential number that is assigned to each pivot table's cache in a single file. In other words a cache index =1 in one file is not the same data as cache index = 1in another file.

    Is that correct?

I'm new to using pivot tables and pivot charts. Across two separate files I'm seeing pivot chart lines that look much too similar to one another to be accurate, and I'm wondering if there is some kind of function I should be using to clear the pivot cache from a previous file.

    Is that sometimes necessary?

Can someone help me understand this and give me ideas on why my pivot chart trend lines are looking nearly identical when I really believe they shouldn't be?

The cache index is indeed just a counter into the collection of pivot caches in a workbook. There is no link between caches in separate workbooks, though it is possible to build a pivot from data in a different workbook.
