conter to show how many cells are selected

When you select a column of cells, say 5 rows deep and 1 column wide, excel, in the upper left-hand corner, shows "5R X 1C" to indicate how many rows and columns are selected.

I have to work with a spreadsheet with the "full-screen" view turned on, and thus, the box displaying how many rows and columns are selected does not show up.

Is there a way to program this in and have excel display in cell A1 for example how many rows are currently selected? I just need the rows, not the columns.

    Thank you.

You either quit or become really good at it. There are no other choices.
