Why don't you simply launch Excel (and the correct workbook) from Powerpoint. Excel would be displayed on the screen and you click on your filters, etc and show how things work. When you close Excel you are back in Powerpoint.
Making Powerpoint drive Excel increases the problem potential.
Another way to accomplish this is to take screen shots of your Excel screens and use them in the slide show. If someone in the audience complains then run Excel and do it from Excel.
