Create excel pie chart from list

    Hello guys

I looking for a way to create a pie chart from a list.

The list is an overview of my expences an is done from a dropdown menu on each line (i.e. I buy some food and choose 'Food' from my dropdown menu. In the cell below I choose 'Office Supplies' for the stapler I just bought. And so on.)

My pie chart should automatically be updated when new posts in the list appear.

This way I can get a visual overview of my expences.

    How do I do this?

I run Mac office 2007 - which means no VBA macros.. Can it be done without?

    Thanks!
    - Jesper

Use defined names for your chart source - see here for example.

Note: if you are using Excel 2008 (not 2007) then you would probably be well advised to update your profile accordingly, and post in the Excel 2008 forum.

You will also need to use Formula to create a summary table of your data other wise each entry will be treated separately

Yes, and my real questions is how to do this?

I had a look a the examples which worked fine. But I still do not know how to get the right number to put in the chart.

    Example of my list:

    A B
    Food 300
    Office 550
    Car 1000
    Food 150
    and so on...

The chart should automatically pick up all Food expenses, Office expenses and Car expenses and put these data in a column each.

Also the categories (Food, Office and Car) are chosen from a dropdown menu on each line. Can you label these?

NOTE: I have changed my Office version to 2008 on my profile. Thanks for letting me know.
