    counting up cells

    I don't necessarily need formulas, theories would do as I like to try them on my own.

    Here is what I would like to do. I use excel to optimize the cutting of aluminum extrusions. when I enter the length and how many times to cut it I am left with some smaller pieces that I designate with a letter for use elsewhere, so for example:

    B15 = 7 pieces left over, C15 = size left over, D15 = "A"
    B16 = 3 pieces left over, C16 = size left over, D16 = "B"
    B17 = 8 pieces left over, C17 = size left over, D17 = "A"

    I would like to add up all the pieces designated "A". My problem is I may have 200 of these rows and no way of knowing which piece I will designate as "A" until i see the actual size left over. I suppose I could just SUM and click on them when I'm done but that could be tedious. Besides I'd like to see a total as I am going through the cuts. What would be the best way to go about this? Your help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

    Well to start with it would be a good idea as to what you want assign as A, B and so on.
    What I mean to say lets assume that if there are 5 pieces left over then you assign A and then use SUMIF for all A, B and so on

    right, well I will assign letters as I go so the cell that shows the total will change as I add more "A's". So using SUMIF I can add cells in one column if values from another column = A?

    I'm pretty much a noob to excel formulas so I will have to look into this SUMIF. I have programming experience just not in excel.

    Well,

    If you can upload a sample file then it would be easier and faster to do and also to understand
