Problem converting from "A1" to R1C1

The below top code is part of a sort Sub I obtained with the macro recorder. I want to convert the "A1" to R1C" & z &" because I want to keep the column as a variable (see bottom code). Problem is there is an error in the code. I don't know what it is. Can somebody tell me?

I have already tried. I get the following error message:

Run-time error '1004'
Method 'Range' of object '_Global' failed

It runs without error in XL 2010
