    Linking text in Autoshapes

    Hi all,

I've got a workbook for aesthetic reasons having text entered by users directly into protected autoshapes. I wanted to link text in one autoshape with another. If that was not enough I wanted to carry forward that text to another autoshape if a different autoshape did not contain text!

    Thanks for any help,
    Joe

Seems like a lot of unnecessary work, post an example workbook
    Hope that helps.

    Hi,

I have not created the worksheets and autoshapes yet, but this is the aesthetic I am looking for. It will be used as an electronic file for employees. If you think there is a better approach to reach the same outcome it would be much appreciated!

Apologies for duplicating posts, I thought they were different concepts and didn't want to overload this thread. But I guess that shows how little I know!

How do you want the shapes to be linked?

I want the text in one autoshape to be identical to linked autoshape(s).

    Thanks again

    Hi tuckjoseph,

You can try linking the text in an autoshape to a cell in the workbook. That way, any autoshape that's linked to that same cell will change together when the text in that cell changes.

    Here's how.
Create a new worksheet (or find any place in any existing worksheet), and write what you want the text in an autoshape to be. Create an autoshape, select the autoshape (and not editing the text in it), then click on the formula bar and type in the location of the text, say, =Sheet1!$A$1

    That should do the trick.
    Attached is a simple example.

I don't think that the OP needs to link cells, but other shapes

    Re: Linking text in Autoshapes

Well, this is a simple work-around that I can think of to have 2 autoshapes have the exact same text to one another. The only downfall is that, if required, one would need to change the text in the specified cell rather than the text in the autoshape itself.

    Re: Linking text in Autoshapes

It would require code to load the related autoshapes with text.

If the autoshapes are on different sheets then you can use the sheet activate event to check and update shapes.

The other option is to use the cells to gather information and just format the layout of the sheet. You can still use shapes to give curved corners. Use brackets rather than rectangles.
And cell borders for the horizontal lines. This way you will be able to get to the input areas.
    Cheers

    Hi,

Thanks quekbc, I have tried linking cells to autoshapes, but unfortunately users need to enter text directly into the autoshape.

royUK, thanks for your help and quick responses!

And thanks Andy Pope, should have thought of curves!

I have come up with a work round that has been provisionally been agreed for this spreadsheet, but I will definitely be using curves for a couple other workbooks I also need to create. This thread was very much worthwhile, thank you!
