    Finding the pattern

i have a question, say you were a student in... math, the book has 10 chapters, every exam the same professor picks 4 questions from 4 different chapters(one from eatch), given that you know what chapters he has chosen eatch year for the last 20 years, could you make a formula that gives you the most probable 4 chapters he is going to pick, based on his previos choises?

Thumbs down Re: Finding the pattern

    That's an Excel/Office question: confused:
    ...based on his previos choices...
    1. The time wasted researching 20 years of previous tests would be better spent reading the current book (they change every year, anyway)...

    2. Probability has no memory; people do, therefore, a crystal ball would work better than VBA equations...

    3. Math/science, at least, is cumulative; therefore, the first chapter must be digested before moving to succeeding chapters. Thus, the prof can't choose chapters at random anyway.

    4. He could choose questions from the covered chapters at random; however, all profs I know of, write their own questions.

    Re: Finding the pattern

This reminds me of my father. He was a Physics Prof. and for 20'ish years in his Mathematical Methods class, he would always give the same problem as the first question on the first mid-term. "Write del^2 in spherical polar coordinates."

All of his past exams were on file in the Library.
He would tell the class that that was going to be the first question.
Every year, someone would get the question very wrong (as opposed to mistaken memory).

Listening in class is the best way to get a good grade. Besides, knowledge is the goal of the class, not a grade.
