Data acqusition from usb device to excel

I have a USB device that can read voltage values (8 channels) and I can read them with terminal emulator. Each channel has an ASCII character associated with it.
I have seen an application that runs excel and by pressing key a macro runs and reads a numerical value from an instrument on a serial connection. Each key press adds a new value to a column of numbers in excel.
Would it be possible to program excel to do this for my data acquisition device with a column for each channel?

I have very limited programming experience and I just need a pointer in the right direction. Or even better would there be a utility available already that can do something similar?

    Thanks

use a variant of the info here:

    http://dev.emcelettronica.com/serial...tion-excel-vba
    or
    http://mc-computing.com/Languages/SerialIO.htm

With regards to the first, it gives a talk-through on how to do it. people leaving comment report it works
but for me it gave no response at all for any of the buttons I clicked. If any one gets it working
please leave a post here saying how they did it. Thanks.
