Upgrading 1 mio documents from 2000 to 2003 to 2007

    Hi,

I have a situation where we have a rather large quantity of Excel documents - around 1 mio. They are 'old versioned' - version 2000 and 2003, and all documents need to be upgraded to 2007.

There are macros and other fun stuff in a large portion of the documents.

    A couple of questions:

    1. How does VB-code/macros respond to a version upgrade - any known issues on this?
    2. Any great ideas on how to take on this challenge?

My first thought is to make a custom application that shuffles through all the documents and handles them one by one, by simply opening the old-versioned document in a new version of Excel, and then automatically saving it as a new version document. That's just an initial idea - any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Just one comment - more of a warning really, but this is something that caught me out on previous occasions.

Microsoft in their wisdom decided to drop the Application.FileSearch method from recent versions of Excel VBA, and didn't provide an equivalent replacement. This means that a suitable workaround has to be implemented for any workbook which uses that method.

Sorry to be the bearer of sad tidings.

    Regards,

    Greg M

    Hi Greg M,

Thanks a lot for letting me know on this - although it's not the best news ;-). Would you happen to know if there's anywhere where I can find listings or descriptions of VBA changes?

Again - thanks for your input!

If the macros don't currently use FileSearch, it's not a problem. If they do, you can change them to use the FileScriptingObject object.

Ok, great - thanks! It looks like I'll make an application which shuffles through the 1 mio Excel files and checks the VBA code for FileSearch, before converting.

Thanks a lot for the inputs!
