    capturing password

First, I know passwords are easy to break. The point is only to keep the average Excel user in a dept of 3 from accidentally damaging the data.

Normally I hardcode passwords to view xlveryhidden sheets.

But this workbook is for a dept head who has standard password(s) he uses to open or edit a file. I would like to capture these passwords and make it the same password(s) to view a hidden sheet.

This way if he ever changes the password to open/edit it will automatically change the password to view the hidden sheet(s).

    Possible?

    Re: capturing password

I'm not trying to break a password!

A department head gave me his workbook to automate. (And he gave me the password so I could work on it.)

I thought that it would be better for him if I used HIS open/edit password for other password purposes in HIS workbook. That way if he ever changes his open/edit password MY unhide sheet password would change with it. Otherwise he's stuck with my hard coded password to view a xlveryhiddensheet forever.

Unless you had the password to open the workbook, the code within that same workbook could never capture the password so it didn't seem controversial.

Perhaps giving me the answer to my innocent question would grant others knowledge we don't wish to disperse here, SORRY.

You might not be asking to break a password, but your idea could be misused.
    Hope that helps.

    Re: capturing password

why not just put a piece of code that runs on the workbook opening.

    if you use:

this way it's irrelivant what password he has coz it'll still show the sheets and allow changes to be made
