is there a way to fix the start and end dates of the x axis so those dates (which may span several years) are always displayed even if major unit is greater than 1
The combination of min/max/major may means your required dates are not included in the built-in axis labels.
Best way is to add a dummy series that has points for all the dates you want to display. Use the data label of the series to display text.
