Understanding Class Modules

Hi

In an effort to better my self taught programming, I've finally started reading up on setting up my own Classes, Inheritance etc., and I am struggling to get my head around it.

I've read the chapter on classes in "Professional Excel Development" by Bullen Bovey and Green as well as a book on .NET and I just don't get it.

SET, LET, GET - Aargh!

Could anyone recommend a basic resource (on-line or a book) that puts it in such easy terms that even a numpty like me could understand.

Hello Martin

Don't confuse classes in VBA with classes in .NET - they are two different beasts. VBA doesn't really have Inheritance for one, whereas .NET is fully object oriented.

I used to find VBA Classes very confusing - they are a pretty hard area of VBA to understand, but eventually it will all fall into place.

I actually thought the Classes chapter in PED was very good, but I was coming from the position of already understanding them. Another resource which has superb chapters on Classes is the VBA Developer's Handbook by Getz and Gilbert. I'm not sure I would decribe it as a Beginner's introduction to classes though, but it is comprehensive.

Thanks Richard. Very much appreciated.

You are right about P.E.D. though. It is excellent. I have spent a long time trying to source some decent intermediate to advanced material; stuff that that doesn't start by telling me how to record macros, set up loops, and select ranges.

I'll look up Getz and Gilbert and see how I get on.
