Worksheet protect and hyperlinks

I want to use a hyperlink in a cell that will be "Locked" (not hidden). It seems that excel 2007 doesn't allow the hyperlink to be activated when the cell is locked. When I mouse over the cell it indicates a link but will not activate it.
I can't set "Select Locked Cells" because it would defeat my purpose of navigating my document.

Can this be done?

You could try using shapes as their hyperlinks appear to work when sheet is protected.
