Summing By Text Criteria

In an Excel Spreadsheet, I need to find a way to find the sum of all values related to particular text criteria.

A simple example is as follows:
Column 1 Column 2
2 a
3 e
7 c
3 d
0 d
2 b etc

Total of all values in column 1 identified by each letter
a
b
c
d
e

Any suggestions on a simple function or macro to do this?

Hi

Have a look at both the SUMPRODUCT and SUMIF functions. There are plenty of examples on this site, and the help files are also pretty useful.
