    Replace numbers with Text ("1" to "Apple", for example)

    What I would like to do is take a list of 1000 words (each of which corresponds to a number between 0 and 999), generate a column of random numbers, and have excel put the corresponding words into the next column.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Try:

    =Lookup(A1,X1:Y1000)

    where A1 houses first random number and column X houses number 0 to 999 (in ascending order) and column Y houses corresponding words to choose from.
    Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Thank You

    Thank You! I knew there had to be some simple way of doing that, but it would have taken me dozens of hours (at the least) to find that. So thank you very much.

    I have one more question. How can I create random numbers within a specified range. "=RAND()" is not giving me much to work with.

    Thank you so much.

    If you have the analysis toolpak addin installed (Tools|Addins)...then you can use : =RANDBETWEEN(0,999)

    else use: =INT((999+1)*RAND()) or =INT(1000*RAND())

    ...for numbers between 0 and 999

    Thanks

    It worked!
    So what would be better about using one of those addins? It seems like this is everything I need to get started making my spreadsheet.

    Anyway, thank you so much for your help. You have turned something that might have been a multi-month endeavor and turned it into a 1 hour endeavor.
