and it is working...however when I click on the cell as if I were going to edit the formula, then tab off the cell it shows the formula rather than the "answer" to the formula...Any ideas what I should check...I've already tried the spreadsheet on another computer and came up with the same thing

    Hi

    1) Check that the cell format (format, cells, number) is not text.
    2) Tools, Options, View and make sure the window options formulas is not selected.

What do you mean by tab off the cell? Do you mean the formula bar? Or the cell itself? When you say it is working, do you mean that normally it shows the result but when you select the cell, the formula bar shows the formula and the cell shows the result and when you put the cell in edit mode ( by double clicking or by F2 ) it shows the formula but not the result then it is supposed to do exactly that. But if you see the formula even when the cell is not in edit mode then you need to swith off formula display mode ( Tools>Options>View>Formulas tick-off ).
There is a keyboard short cut available to switch off/on the formula display mode but I cannot recollect what it is. Can some give the short-cut?

    Leading space?

If there is a leading space in your formula, Excel thinks it is text.
