Autofilter sort protected sheet

I have the sheet protected with options to allow sort and autofilter. Everything on the autofilter works except for the sort ascending and sort descending options. Is there any way to make it work without unprotecting the data?

I was thinking that may be the only way. Means I would have to have cells to select which data column to sort and which way (ascending/descending). I could do that but was hoping there may be a way to allow the sort on autofilter to still work. I'm guessing not.
