    Simple Operation Turned Puzzling

I want to use the forumla "='CONTRACTS'!F25" to bring data from the contracts tab and put it in target cell J42 on the a tab labeled "PROJECT WORKSHEET." I have already used similar formulas to populate the cells J40 and J41 directly above J42 using formulas similarly written.

When I write the formula above in target cell J42, a navigation panel pops up as soon as I press RETURN. The navigation panel is titled, "Update Values: CONTRACTS."

I've used the same conformity in writing formulas to reference data numerous times before and have never encountered this problem. The cell on the CONTRACTS (F25) tab where J42 gets its value was obtained using the summation tool on the 16 cells above F25.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Are these in the same workbook or in different workbooks

    Hi,

    Strange problem I agree

There must be something strange going on in the Contracts sheet. Have you got any cells that are dependent on F25 or anything that is calculating after any change? Attach the sheet if you want and I'll have a look.

All the spreadsheets tabs exist within the same workbook, and no other cells depended on the value of F25 other than the target cell on the PROJECT WORKSHEET tab that I attempted to copy to.

F25 resulted from summing manually entered cost data in the 16 cells above it.

I finally gave up on this one and solved the problem by copying in a similar tab from another workbook and copying the data from the original problemmatic tab into the copied tab. I then successfully used the original formula in the copied tab to insert the desired cost data into cell J42 on PROJECT WORKSHEET. ?????

Today I experienced the same problem in a similarly written workbook. I'd like to understand what's causing this problem, but, even zipped, the size of the 4 related spreadsheets tabs within the workbook itself exceeds the 100 Kb attached file size limit.
