Thanks for your reply.

Despite the limitations you mention, surely it should perform better
than it does for me. I just downloaded Microsoft's Web Connectivity
Kit for Excel 97, and according to the examples they include, it looks
like it should be able to do what I'm expecting. Unfortunately, the
URLs are out of date, so I can't actually test the examples. Oh well,
more research . . .
