cant change numbers back to general format wont let me

in excel when i type for example 1 in enters as 0.01 i have tried changing
format to general but it does not work ive also tried the decimal points but
it does not give me the number 1 but if i type in 100 it comes up 1 please
help i am at my wits end

Go Tools==>Options==>Edit and click off the "Fixed Decimal places" flag.
