Has anyone heard of a macro that provides a sorting function at 90
degrees to the one that is built in to Excel? I would love to be able
to sort the columns of a spreadsheet based on the values in one row.

You can do that already with the built-in sort. In Data>Sort, then click
Options where you can an option to sort left to right.
