Excel opens All files in Default file location

Whatever I set my default file location to,
ALL files, regardles of type, size,
Excel attempts to open them when
    Excel starts.

I end up using Task Manager to
    shut down Excel, rename the
directory I had listed as Default
    File Location, and restart Excel,
    which now lists
    F:\Documents and Settings\....\My Documents\
    as the Default File Location.
    Fortunately that folder has no
    files of any kind.
    This is very wierd behaviour,
and I can't set where this option is
    being set in Excel.

    Hi J,

All workbooks stored in your XLStart folder will be opened each time you
    open Excel.

With the exception of Personal.xls, or any other workbooks you do wish to
automatically open, try moving these workbooks - perhaps to your default
    file location.

    Regards,
    Norman

    Yes, very strange... VERY strange.

The default file location is just where Excel sets the directory for saving
or opening files -- not a location of files to open on startup.

Look for the XLStart folder and see if there are any macro-containing files
    in there.

I think XLSTART is in c:\documents and settions\YOURUSERNAME\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Excel\

Are you sure you didn't put something in:

    Tools|options|General tab
"at startup, open all files in:" <xl2002+ wording>
    "Alternate Startup File location" <before xl2002 wording>

    Positive I didn't do that.
This all started with one file being opened
on the LAN everytime I opened a file in
    one of the Department's directories.
Thought it was weird, but didn't really care,
    small spreadsheet anyway.
But now, it's a major problem with
all files being opened it whatever I
set as the default File Location directory.
If there is fifty files - of any type - jpg,
doc, mdb, Excel tries to open all of them.
    Many errors result.
I will try some of the suggestions.
