What is the maximum length of a URL in a web query?

What is the maximum length of a URL in a web query?

I have a really long URL, with GET parameters to use. If the URL string
is too long, how do I manage to execute the web query?

INFO: Maximum URL Length Is 2,083 Characters in Internet Explorer

although it says the standard specifies no limitation.
