    get a sequence number from . . . ?

I have a form, which I am developing in Excel. You can imagine a Purchase
Order, and you would have the right idea.

The original form will be in the form of an Excel template, so the users
open new Purchase Order forms from that template. I want the user to be
able to get a unique sequence number, which can then be used to distinguish
each individual Purchase Order created. The newly created form would be
P.O. 11972, and the next P.O. would be 11973, etc.

Is there an established way to do that? For example, are there any little
Java/.Net widgets, which could sit either on a network or on a local
computer, and which Excel could interact with, to get a unique sequence
number/serial number to put in a spreadsheet?

Could this be done with Excel itself? Say, a workbook, functioning as a
log, with a long list of sequence numbers, and a macro could just go get the
next number in the sequence and automatically record some basic data in the
    log about the new P.O.?
