    New from Template Issue

I have an Excel template that upon opening launches a dialog box and
retrieves another workbook into Excel. If I open the first template by
retrieving it straight into Excel or double-clicking it from Explorer, then
ActiveWorkbook.Path gives its location on disk, which I can then use to
retrieve the second template from the same folder. However, if the file is
opened using the New Task Pane in the "New from Template" option,
ActiveWorkbook.Path contains "". Is there any way to determine the original
path from which a new workbook was created?

    Thanks,

    Re: New from Template Issue

If you open the .xlt (template workbook) to edit, you can get the path.

But if you use the .xlt to create a new workbook, then the path isn't
available. It's not like word and .dot files.

In fact, one of your windows setting is non-standard. When you double click on
a .xlt file, the default action is usually New--not Open. So I guess you were
    kind of lucky doing that.

If you want to fix that "problem", you can reregister excel.
    close excel
    windows start button|run
    excel /unregserver
    then
    windows start button|run
    excel /regserver

(But you may not want to do this!)
