Addresses on a Map

I知 NOT looking for specific instructions here, But I am looking for an overview on how to display addresses on a map?

I am collecting data on crimes in a neighborhood. I may have 9,000 entry a year. I can collect addresses, but how would I display as points on a map? I知 thinking Google Maps will only map a certain number of points. Would I need GPS or is an address good enough to display on a map? Is it possible to link an Excel table to Google Maps, have that update when Excel opens?

Ideas please??
