Advanced VBA: MakeCompiledFile method to write a project as a DLL

I always wondered about how to make the MakeCompiledFile method of the VBIDE library work:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Microsoft doc says that MakeCompiledFile "Causes the current project to be written as a DLL. The DLL name is specified by the BuildFileName property."

But if I try it on a xlsm or xlam file I always get the Runtime error 748 - "Method or property is not valid in this type of project".

What kind of file is it supposed to work for?

    Thanks!
Wow I was surprised to see an answer by Chip Pearson! (RIP)

So, it's (or was) supposed to work with Office Developer Edition.
Unfortunately with a fast research I see that the last Office Developer Edition was "2000".

May be Visual Studio (and TwinBASIC) are the only current way to do it?

These links may be of interest to you. I have never created a dll or used a developer kit but it looks as though these links should point you in the right direction.
